I’m currently rereading How To Stop Feeling Like Sh*t by Andrea Owen so I thought I’d give you a glimpse of some of the topics she covers to help people stop sabotaging their own happiness (even though the book is focused on women, I’d imagine most people could benefit from the points made). I really, really like this book. The goal is to help readers identify our own trouble spots and clarify some that we may not even label as problematic behaviors. Owen is quick to ensure readers that she’s been there too, sharing stories from her own life in which she was holding herself back unintentionally and sometimes unknowingly. You know, it can be very comforting to feel like it isn’t just us sometimes. After all, feeling understood is an important factor in feeling accepted and worthy. My suggestion: read this book to help you get a relatable point of reference on those nagging ways you’re holding yourself back and then take note of the problems that really hit home and research further with your counselor or on your own or with me.
Some of the topics she covers include but are not limited to:
Dealing with your Inner Critic
Numbing Mechanisms
Being a Control Freak
Toxic People Pleasing
Imposter Complex
Perfectionism
Heavy, right? I know that each chapter reminded me of times I’ve suffered through each of the struggles she discusses. Inner Critic, yep. People Pleasing, yep, that’s me too. I definitely get it. So, the bad news is, you might have a little work to do. But the good news is, it’s for you and YOU’RE NOT ALONE. As I progress through the book, I’ll be completing the exercises and sharing some of my findings with you. Some of the exercises she suggests to revisit occasionally. Anyone willing to be an open and vulnerable accountability partner with me on this? If you’ve read this book, please leave your thoughts in the comments below!
