Gratitude

After mulling over the topic of my first blog post for a while, it struck me as inexcusably obvious that I should start by expressing my gratitude. I have come to believe that being grateful is the root of all blessings/good karma/luck to come for each of us. I’ve found that if I get in a funk, expressing my gratitude for anything and everything I can think of, whether related to my bad mood or not, sets me back on a positive path and keeps me operating on a higher frequency.  I often express my thanks for the challenging people that are making me angry, for heartfelt moments of strong connection, for rain that soaks my day.  I even say a quick prayer of thanks for the last person that made coffee in the office.  It’s not always easy to feel grateful when I am frustrated or just want to go back to bed. I definitely have moments when I wish that feeling of gratitude would wash over me and relieve my inner turmoil.  My prayer game could use alot of practice, but when I do pray, it’s 98% thanks to God for everything I can think of at the time.  It just lifts my spirit and drowns out my worries.  If God is not your thing, that’s ok.  I’m sure there’s some higher power you feel warm fuzzies for when things are going right!  So my challenge to anyone reading this is: The next time you feel stressed, anxious, angry, sad, lonely, misunderstood, heartbroken, or abandoned, find something in the situation for which to be thankful.  Be thankful for the lesson you’re being taught, be thankful for your job even though you want to quit, be thankful that you’re safe after that jackass cut you off in traffic. Maybe all you can muster is, “I’m grateful to be alive today,” and honestly, that’s enough.

Has anyone tried keeping a gratitude journal? I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments below!
